WHY ALBANIA?
Europe’s last unpolished corner
For many travellers, Albania is still the unknown patch on the European map. Is it safe? Is it open? I get asked these questions often. My answer is simple: go now. Albania feels like Croatia twenty years ago — open, raw, not yet pressed flat by mainstream tourism — and even National Geographic notes how quickly that’s changing.
This route brings together the best of what this Balkan corner has to offer: the turquoise coves of the Ionian Sea and the wild Karaburun peninsula, the Llogara mountains with their 360° sea views, the UNESCO stone cities of Berat and Gjirokastër, rafting through the Osumi Canyon, the ancient ruins of Butrint — and, as the journey’s quiet climax, the Dinaric Alps with Lake Komani (“the Albanian fjords”), the Valbona valley and the legendary highland village of Theth.
This trip is for travellers who choose nature, movement and lived experience. The kind who want mountain trails, hidden coves and authentic villages as their main travelling companions — without missing the most striking cultural and historical places along the way.
September is the ideal month – the peak crowds have thinned, the sea is still warm and the mountains are at their best.
Tourism in Albania is still finding its feet, and service can be uneven. That’s why I handle the quality filter and the logistics. You just turn up, walk in, and let the country do its work.

Is this for you?
This Albania journey is for you, if…
✓ You’re drawn to nature, movement and lived experience — not all-inclusive resort time
✓ You want to walk, climb, paddle, swim — to actually be in the place, not photograph it from a window
✓ You want Albania in a small group, not on a mass-tourism route
✓ You value the energy of like-minded travellers, not random company
✓ You’re looking for a trip that stays with you — a story, not a postcard
✓ You want a journey led by an experienced nature-travel guide who actually reads the landscape
If you recognise yourself in at least three of these — you’re probably in the right place.

Narrow rock walls, class II–III rapids — suitable for first-timers.

Clear rivers and springs
The Shala and Valbona rivers, the Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër) and Theth’s Blue Eye.

10-DAY ITINERARY
The journey, phase by phase
Each day on this Albania journey has been designed to deliver real experience without losing natural rhythm. Below are the journey’s three main phases. The full day-by-day programme follows once you apply.
Important: the route is an adventure-travel plan. The lead guide may adjust the day order and activities for weather, sea conditions, safety and group rhythm — while keeping the essence of the journey intact.
Phase 1: Southern Riviera and the wild Ionian coast · Days 1–3
Tirana → Radhime → Karaburun peninsula → Himara → Llogara → Gjipe beach
We start with the sea and a soft landing. Arriving in Tirana, we head south to Radhime, where turquoise water and fresh seafood are waiting. The next day we explore the Karaburun peninsula by private boat — Albania’s wildest coast, with the Haxhi Ali Cave and hidden coves you can’t reach by road. Then we move into the mountains: a hike in Llogara National Park with a 360° panorama of the sea below (weather permitting), and a swim at the wild Gjipe beach, reachable only on foot.
Phase 2: Three UNESCO sites in two days + the Osumi canyon · Days 4–6
Butrint → Gjirokastër → Berat → Osumi canyon → Shkodër
From wild nature to culture and adrenaline. Along the Ionian coast — where breathtaking views appear behind almost every corner — we head further south. We explore Butrint, Albania’s most important ancient city, set inside its own national park where Greek and Roman history meet wetland ecosystems and lagoons. We glimpse Greek Corfu across the water (maybe next time), then turn inland, passing the blue spring of Syri i Kaltër. Ahead lie two UNESCO pearls — the silver-roofed Gjirokastër and the “city of a thousand windows”, Berat — the only two cities in Albania you really shouldn’t miss. The next day we put on helmets and raft the narrow, majestic stone walls of the Osumi canyon. In the afternoon we begin the long drive north, arriving by evening in Shkodër — the gateway to the Alps.
Phase 3: The Albanian fjords and the Alpine crossing · Days 7–9
Lake Komani → Shala river → Valbona → Theth valley
The visual and physical climax of the journey. We start the morning with a ferry across Lake Komani, known as “the Albanian fjords” for its steep cliffs and turquoise water. We swim in the Shala river (sometimes called “Albania’s Thailand” — not without reason) and arrive by evening in the Valbona valley, deep in the Dinaric Alps. The next day is our Big Hike — a 15 km, physically demanding but indescribably beautiful route over the Valbona Pass (1,794 m), between 2,500 m peaks, descending in the late afternoon into the legendary highland village of Theth. Before returning to Shkodër we explore Theth’s nature, walk to the Grunas waterfall, and visit a traditional stone kulla — the highland refuge tower. Then we leave the mountain quiet, descending the new mountain road back to civilisation, and enjoy a final dinner by Lake Shkodër. The following morning we drive back to Tirana. Before the airport there may be time for one last coffee and a glimpse of the modern Blloku district. We fly home pleasantly tired — with a full memory case and our own Escape Story to share.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions about this journey
Why aren’t flights included?
Flights aren’t included so you can choose your own airline, class and timing — and arrive earlier or stay longer if you wish. After applying I’ll help you find the best flight option. From most European hubs, Lufthansa with a connection via Munich or Frankfurt is currently a reasonable choice (\~€200–300 from Western Europe).
When is the journey confirmed?
Once a group of at least 6 travellers has formed. If the group doesn’t form — payments are refunded in full.
What are the accommodations like?
3–4★ hotels and family-run guesthouses. In Berat and Gjirokastër — where availability allows, authentic historic accommodation beneath the castle walls. In the Alps — charming mountain guesthouses. Each place is part of the experience, not a sleep box.
Is this an organised tour with a guide?
Yes — and the guide is a conservation biologist, traveller and biodiversity expert with 25+ years’ experience. Rolands designs the route personally and is present for the whole journey.
Is Albania safe to travel in?
Yes. Albania is a safe country for travellers. Locals are exceptionally welcoming, and tourism infrastructure is improving fast. As in any country — common sense and reasonable caution remain the best companions.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate to good fitness. A couple of hikes (Llogara, Valbona–Theth) are 12–15 km with significant elevation gain (up to 1,000 m), but not technically difficult. What matters most is willing legs and the wish to walk. If you’re unsure — get in touch and we’ll talk it through.
Do I need a visa?
EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian and most other Western passport holders do not need a visa for Albania. A passport valid at least 3 months beyond the return date is required. Check your country’s specific rules before applying.
Can I join solo?
Yes, and most travellers do. The group is small, carefully assembled, and built around shared values. You’ll travel with kindred spirits — or with people who quickly become so.

YOUR GUIDE
Travel with Rolands
I believe in journeys that have meaning and structure — which is why I designed this route myself. My naturalist’s notebook holds more than two decades of fieldwork, and eight years of running Baltic Nature Adventures taught me that the best stories happen off the beaten path. I built this Albania journey so you experience this still-wild Balkan jewel in its most authentic form. Nature is the country’s greatest asset, and we lean into it — alongside the unique historical places that genuinely deserve a stop.
A background in improvisation has taught me to create lightness and flow within a group; conservation biology, to read the whole picture where others see only details. The goal is a journey where knowledge and experience meet humour, presence, and real respect for the nature and people around us.
Important to know before applying
Our journey concept is adventure travel, so please come open to unexpected adjustments. The lead guide adapts the route to conditions while preserving the essence of the trip. We recommend travel insurance that covers unforeseen delays and cancellations. Insurance covering hiking activities above 2,000 m is mandatory. The journey will be filmed and photographed – material may be used for Escaperies promotional purposes.
