WHY SRI LANKA?
An island where the journey almost builds itself
I have travelled in many countries, but Sri Lanka surprised me fast. Wild nature that still manages to impress someone who has spent more than two decades reading landscapes. Culture with 2,500 years of memory in it. People who bring warmth into small everyday moments. And food that quietly ruins your previous understanding of curry.
Sri Lanka is one of those rare places where jungle, wildlife, mountains, fast rivers, warm ocean and serious historical depth fit naturally into one route. The adventure does not need to be forced here. It appears while walking, paddling, swimming, eating, watching and occasionally trying to work out what the monkeys are planning.
This journey is for travellers who choose nature, movement and lived experience – but who also do not want to miss the best cultural and historical places the island offers. Ancient water kingdoms, Buddhist temples, tea country, rainforest and the Indian Ocean all belong in the same story.

Is this for you?
This Sri Lanka journey is for you, if…
✓ You’re drawn to nature, movement and real experience — not an all-inclusive resort bubble
✓ You want to walk, paddle, raft, surf, swim, taste and actually be in the place
✓ You like a clear route, but also enough flexibility for weather, wildlife and human energy
✓ You value the energy of like-minded travellers, not random company
✓ You’re looking for a trip that stays in memory as an adventure story, not a checklist
✓ You want a journey led by an experienced nature-travel guide who reads the landscape
If you recognise yourself in at least three of these — you’re probably in the right place.

16-DAY ITINERARY
The journey, phase by phase
Each day on this Sri Lanka journey has been designed with a rhythm that allows both real experience and breathing space. Below are the main phases of the route. The full day-by-day programme follows once you apply.
Important: private transport follows us throughout the journey. This gives the route proper flexibility — if you are tired or want to skip a specific activity, the vehicle can take you comfortably to the next accommodation or meeting point.
Phase 1: Where the ocean meets the jungle · Days 1–3
Colombo → Negombo → Wilpattu
We arrive and settle into the tropical rhythm with a soft landing in Negombo, a fishing town by the Indian Ocean. A canal ride, first coastal light and time to let the body realise it is no longer in a northern spreadsheet. Then we head northwest to Wilpattu National Park — one of Sri Lanka’s wildest safari landscapes. A jungle lodge, a slower safari mood, leopard tracks, hopefully sloth bears, elephants and real nature.
Phase 2: Civilisation with 2,500 years of breath · Days 4–6
Wilpattu → Anuradhapura → Sigiriya → Kandy
From the jungle we move into the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura, the ancient capital, is explored slowly by tuk-tuk — reservoirs, stupas, sacred trees and a civilisation that understood water long before modern planning departments discovered PowerPoint. Then comes Sigiriya, the famous Lion Rock, and the sunset view from Pidurangala. On the way we stop at a spice garden chosen for authenticity. Finally we reach Kandy, the island’s Buddhist heart, where we can visit the Temple of the Tooth, walk through Udawattakele forest reserve or simply let the culture buzz settle a little.
Phase 3: Rivers, mountains and tea trails · Days 7–9
Kandy → Kitulgala → Nuwara Eliya → Ella
We begin with water: rafting and kayaking around Kitulgala’s river country. Then the air cools as we climb into the highlands and the old hill-station atmosphere of Nuwara Eliya. Several of the most scenic parts of The Pekoe Trail take us through tea plantations, cloud forest and mountain edges. We stay in lively Ella — tea from leaf to cup, views from Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, and enough mountain cafés to make recovery look like a legitimate cultural activity.
Phase 4: Waterfalls and the quiet southern safari · Days 10–11
Ella → Diyaluma Falls → Tissamaharama → Bundala → Tangalle
We leave the mountains and descend toward Diyaluma Falls, where we swim in natural pools above the cascades. Around Tissamaharama we watch the sky fill with flying foxes — giant fruit bats. The next morning brings Bundala National Park, a quieter UNESCO biosphere reserve of lagoons, dunes, crocodiles, flamingos and birds that make binoculars feel suddenly useful. By the end of the day we reach the wilder Tangalle coast and the first proper swim in the Indian Ocean.
Phase 5: Beaches and the living rainforest · Days 12–13
Tangalle → Sinharaja → South coast and the Indian Ocean
Time for a tuk-tuk-flavoured coastal adventure along some of the south’s most beautiful beaches. Then we turn inland again, into deep green: Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s UNESCO rainforest and one of its last major lowland rainforest areas. Jungle sound, a night walk, a guided rainforest trek, endemic species, clear stream swims and dinner wrapped in forest noise. After the humidity has done its educational work, we return to the ocean.
Phase 6: Waves, turtles and the rhythm of the ocean · Days 14–16
South coast → Galle → Colombo
Our final base is a surf-friendly south-coast beach — Ahangama, Weligama, Mirissa or another carefully chosen place. The exact spot remains my small surprise, because a good ending deserves some field discretion. We swim, surf beginner-friendly waves with instructors, snorkel with wild sea turtles, and wander through Galle’s old town, where Portuguese and Dutch history meet ocean air. A farewell dinner, one last sunset, and the road back to Colombo airport — pleasantly tired, salt-marked, and carrying your own Escape Story.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions about this journey
Why aren’t flights included?
Flights aren’t included so you can choose your own airline, class and timing — and arrive earlier or stay longer if you wish. After applying I’ll help you find the best flight option.
When is the journey confirmed?
Once a group of at least 6 travellers has formed. If the group doesn’t form — payments are refunded in full.
What are the accommodations like?
Guesthouses, eco-lodges and boutique hotels. Accommodation is chosen primarily for authenticity and the positive footprint it leaves on local people, communities and small businesses. Each place is part of the journey, not just a bed with walls.
Is this an organised tour with a guide?
Yes — and the guide is a professional nature guide, traveller and biodiversity expert with 25+ years’ experience. We carefully design all our routes and our lead guide is present throughout the journey. This is not a standard group tour.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes. The electronic visa (ETA) costs around 35 USD and is completed online. I will help you with the process.
How fit do I need to be?
You do not need to be an athlete but this journey is for active people who move regularly. Activities are suitable for different levels, and there is always a calmer alternative. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we’ll talk it through.
Can I join solo?
Yes, and most travellers do. The group is small, carefully assembled, and built around shared values. You’ll travel with kindred spirits — or with people who quickly become so.

YOUR GUIDE
Travel with Rolands
I believe in journeys that have meaning and structure — which is why I designed this route myself. My naturalist’s notebook holds more than two decades of fieldwork, and eight years of running Baltic Nature Adventures taught me that the best stories happen off the beaten path. In Sri Lanka I have selected places that speak for themselves — not a mass-tourism product, but a careful mosaic of what this green, vivid island does best.
A background in improvisation has taught me to create lightness and flow within a group; conservation biology – to read the whole picture where others see only details. The goal is a journey where knowledge and experience meet humour, presence, and real respect for the nature and people around us.
Important to know before applying
Our journey concept is adventure travel, so please come open to unexpected adjustments. The lead guide adapts the route to conditions while preserving the essence of the trip. We recommend travel insurance that covers unforeseen delays and cancellations. The journey will be filmed and photographed — material may be used for Escaperies promotional purposes.
